Based in the SF Bay Area, I offer trauma-informed psychological treatment for post-traumatic stress, addiction, grief, anxiety, depression, and related life challenges, as well as support for positive growth and insight building. I primarily utilize a combination of EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and IFS (internal family systems) therapies to provide a somatic and source-focused approach to healing. I educate my clients on the universality of traumatic and addictive experiences. I define trauma broadly as any past experience that remains charged and disturbing, and thus has value in alleviating mental health challenges in the present. It's helpful to understand how traumatic and addictive elements exists in all of us and are not static, but rather ebb and flow as reverberations of past experiences (and those of our family of origin). l frame the looping amplification of addiction as stemming from a healthy evolutionary need to feel safe and easeful, but in a way that can become self-destructive through the distortion of trauma that resides in our nervous systems, until processed.

My focus is working with individuals who are struggling with OCD, emetophobia (fear of vomit), anxiety, and hair or skin picking. I use evidenced-based approaches like ACT, ComB, and ERP. Are You Ready to Create Positive Lasting Change? “Change is not merely necessary to life – it is life.” – Alvin Toffler Few things in life, if any, are as constant as change! Whether or not we are ready for it, change comes to us in many forms and in many ways – in our personal and professional relationships, in where we live, in our career paths, in our life goals and ambitions, and in how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. However, despite the continuity of change, coping with it can be a difficult and troubling experience. Change often causes us to step outside of what’s familiar and comfortable – bringing up new questions, unsettling emotions, and uncertainty about life and our place in it. In order to survive, we must learn to accept and navigate change. But survival is just the beginning… To achieve true success, we must go beyond becoming comfortable with change. We must learn to create the changes we want and need! It can take a lot of work. But despite the difficulties, you’ll find few things in life more profoundly rewarding than being able to create positive lasting change. Whether you’re trying to cope with current life changes or actively working to create the life you desire, there may be nothing so important as having an objective and highly-skilled partner to help you along the path to a better life. Helping people take control of their lives and create positive, lasting change is exactly what I do. And I love doing it! I’ve learned to create the life I’ve always wanted, and I know no greater joy than helping others do the same. If I can do it, so can you. How My Work Can Work For You The first step necessary for coping with – and creating – change is to identify where you are now as well as the life you’d like to create. And, through a combination of thoughtful questioning and out-of-the-box thinking, I’ve helped countless clients do just that. Once we’ve established a clear set of goals for our work together, you will be ready to learn the strategies, tools, and skills necessary to create a life of meaning and self-fulfillment. Then, using a variety of techniques such as solution-focused, short-term counseling, in-depth psychotherapy, psychospirituality, dreamwork, and other methodologies, I can help you overcome anxiety and depression, conquer recurring obstacles, discover meaning, and create a life you’re proud to call a true success! Solution-Focused Counseling – This relatively brief method of counseling can help relieve current symptoms you may be experiencing (such as anxiety or depression), facilitate better communication with others, reduce stress, and help you feel better. Long-Term Psychotherapy – My use of longer-term psychotherapy includes Jungian depth work, dream work, and psychospirituality. This type of therapy can help you explore who you are, discover meaning and purpose in life, and achieve a greater level of self-understanding. Career Counseling – The career counseling services I provide can help identify areas in your life (career, relationships, spirituality, etc.) where you feel called to be more aligned with your purpose. With that knowledge in hand, I can help you acknowledge and overcome any barriers preventing you from achieving your dreams.

I am a licensed psychologist with strong specialties in treating folks with eating disorders and anxiety. I also have extensive experience working with people with depression and relationship concerns. I am a compassionate, direct therapist. I work collaboratively with my patients to set and achieve their goals. These goals often include increased self-acceptance, as well as changes in mood, thought patterns, and behaviors. My therapy is rooted in empirically based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic theory, and neuroscience research. I develop customized strategies to help my patients manage painful thoughts and emotions, change unhelpful behaviors, and increase motivation. I also help cultivate self-compassion and self-understanding. Self-understanding promotes self-acceptance. When you allow yourself to be who you are, your inner critic has no leverage, and you move more easily toward a meaningful and fulfilling life. For most of my patients, this is the ultimate goal. Please go to my website for more information. My blog describes many of the concepts and strategies I use.

Being a young adult can feel scary right now. Even in these times, I believe deeply in our innate capacity to heal, grow, and transform. Society doesn’t make that process easy- we face inequality, get stuck, and sometimes feel overwhelmed by the weight of it all. There is a path forward, but it’s not always easy to find. A big part of my work is helping you blaze this trail and collaborating with your success. Using a combination of warmth, mindfulness, brain/body science, creativity and sharing knowledge, I help keep your process moving toward living the life you want. Over the past 15 years, I’ve specialized in working with teen girls, young adults in their 20s and 30s, and those navigating life transitions, school, trauma, or relational challenges. This life stage can feel intense- you're shaping your career, defining your values, and building relationships that matter. Together, we can explore those big questions while tending to the deeper layers beneath them. I’m also an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Certified Therapist™, and I use this powerful tool to help clients heal from distressing experiences, integrate their stories, and access new ways of being. EMDR can be our central focus or one approach among many, depending on your needs. As a Puerto Rican-American therapist, I bring a culturally responsive, decolonized lens to this work. I understand that our struggles aren’t just internal, they’re shaped by larger systems that impact how we live, relate, and find belonging. If you're navigating second-generation or multicultural identity, I’ve got you. My goal is to create a space that honors your complexity and supports your power. Whether you’re seeking support for anxiety, identity exploration, trauma recovery, or simply a space to connect with yourself, I’d be honored to work with you.
Rui Dolen is a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in the treatment of trauma, developmental trauma, and reactions to other stressful events in children and adults. Embodying her own trauma practice, and with the support of her professional communities, she has been on her healing journey and grateful for her little miracle every day. Growing up, Rui has seen her own family and the society in China suffering from different forms of trauma including generational trauma. Human sexuality is an endless source of self-knowledge through which we tap into our subconsciousness. In most people it is suppressed and hidden from our conscious minds due to the rigid cultural and religious belief systems along with our personal beliefs. Learning about ourselves through our sexual expressions will help some of us obtain wisdom and knowledge about who we are. Most of non-sexual issues stem from unhealthy self-perceptions, specifically from denying our own sexuality and freedom to express ourselves sexually. Ability to fully realize ourselves comes from expanding our consciousness through exploring our sexuality and sensuality.
