The years surrounding college --young adulthood--is a time filled with amazing exploration as well as stress, sadness, and a lot of unknowns. We really begin to learn not just about who we have been to others, but about who we can become. Working with a therapist can offer a way to explore some of these feelings and experiences with someone who has first hand understanding of being a youg adult (we all were at one time!), who wants to get to know who you are becoming and help you find a way to get there with a sense of power and voice. Life can be awesome but it can also be scary and hard sometimes and no-one has to do this alone!

Through a warm but focused conversational style, I help individuals, couples and families (adolescents and adults) by utilizing contemporary clinical research and theory to construct a collaborative and personally-tailored treatment plan aimed at symptom relief and enhancement of psychological skillfulness. Whether the core concerns are straightforward, like seasonal affective disorder (a short-term depression caused by winter), or more abstract and complex patterns of negative emotional states and self-destructive behaviors, I provide short-term and long-term treatment plans to meet your unique needs through a balanced and blended approach of insight-generating exploration and cognitive-social-emotional skills-building. I emphasize a solutions-oriented focus on present-day distress. On a session-by-session basis, I strive to concretely track goals, insights, and progress, and provide a consistent measure of clarity and relief. I have accumulated over seven years of professional experience working with adolescents and adults across residential, inpatient and intensive outpatient treatment settings, including rotations at NY-Presbyterian Hospital, Jacobi Medical Center, McLean Hospital, and Germane Lawrence. I have studied Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) under Marsha Lineham and, for over two years, applied DBT treatment to personality-disordered adolescents and adults, including interpersonal effectiveness, mindfulness, and distress tolerance groups, 24/7 skills coaching, and participation in DBT training and supervision groups; I have studied Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) under Steven Hayes, and received over three years of doctoral training, supervision, and didactics in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety and depression. And he studied interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) under Greg Hinrichsen for grief in older adults. And I have received formal and advanced training in other research-based treatment protocols, including prolonged exposure (PE) for trauma and “stages of change” and other motivational interviewing frameworks for substance abuse and addictions.

The best mental health care occurs when the patient's needs are prioritized and deeply integrated into the treatment plan. Whether you're dealing with anxious thoughts, phobias, learning difficulties, physical symptoms tied to mental health, depression, grief, or feeling like a dark cloud is always blocking out your light, help is available. By creating a judgment-free environment that fosters safe and open communication, we’ll work together to carefully assess your or your loved one’s unique situation and develop the most effective care plan. I believe the key to addressing many unwanted feelings and behaviors lies in combining holistic and pharmacological approaches, including modifying one's environment, engaging in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and using medications to address chemical imbalances in the brain. As your provider, I will work diligently to create a personalized medication plan that alleviates your challenges while minimizing tolerable side effects. Additionally, using evidence-based measurement tools, we can track treatment effectiveness and make necessary adjustments along the way. Your voice and perspective as a woman or girl are celebrated here. This is a dedicated space where you can be comfortable discussing female centered topics and experiences. I believe that social interactions, societal stresses and unique biology impact girls and women in ways that require a female centered lens for mental health treatment. Coming to therapy knowing this is a specialized practice can lead to greater comfort exploring trauma and female specific issues. These deeper conversations build the therapeutic alliance and increase the potential that women and girls will see improvement in their mental health symptoms

One of my specializations is helping students who feel they are on the verge of dropping a semester because of stress, anxiety, or other difficulties. If you feel stuck, overwhelmed, in a crisis or at a crossroads, or in any situation in which 50 minutes of counseling isn't “enough”, an Individual Counseling Retreat may be a good fit. This service was created in part to fill a gap in services between the 50-minute session and going into a hospital or rehab. But it's also intended for anyone who simply wants or needs to go deeper than the typical therapy session. A personal counseling retreat puts therapy into a different context: An inspiring setting with a lot of time outdoors. Time to walk and talk, rather than just sitting, and leverage the healing effect of time in nature. We choose a retreat center or other setting so that the process itself is uplifting and inspiring, both calming and energizing. The impact of getting off the grid and devoting time to re-grouping can't be overstated. The time frame of a multi-day retreat allows a lot of learning and processing in a condensed period of time, with a minimum of distractions. The counseling addresses your difficulties, but also focuses on positive psychology- the skills of thriving and well-being. It also integrates meditation, mindfulness, yoga, and healthy food. The one-to-one counseling allows for truly personalized attention and coaching. It provides the time and space to explore issues in depth, connecting dots and seeing new ways of responding. It's not a magic cure, because nothing is. But it is a unique and highly impactful experience and a powerful commitment to your future well-being. A typical retreat is 3-5 days, and includes mindfulness meditation, stress management skills, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), addiction recovery counselings as appropriate, and other evidence-supported therapeutic frameworks. MBCT focuses on empowering you to understand helpful and unhelpful patterns of thinking and reacting, and grow the positive ones. The work focuses primarily on the here and now, less on lengthy excavation of your past. The overall goal is resourcing you with new skills to better manage the stress and challenges you return to post-retreat. You come away with more than a diagnosis and a medication prescription. The outcome of a retreat is a new understanding of how your mind, nervous system and body interact, and how to ride life's ups and downs with more resilience. You leave with a post-retreat plan of self-care, which includes specific daily practices to support ongoing self-regulation and what you value most: Being your best self. As appropriate, post-retreat follow up with me is available. Clients who bring flexibility of mind- an ability to look at problems in a new way- and who have a love of the outdoors tend to resonate with this work the most. To discuss fees, location options and other logistical matters, email or call. Let's find a plan that works for you!
