I am a licensed mental health counselor. My goal is to support clients with their mental health as well as stress management, relationship issues, and finding the appropriate services. Therapy does not have to solely be for people in crisis. Being proactive with your mental health and attending therapy can have long-lasting benefits. My first goal when starting with a client is building rapport. In order for therapy to be effective, there needs to be a mutual trust between the client and therapist. I primarily use a cognitive behavioral and person centered approach to therapy. Although every session typically includes “talk therapy,” I also try to use a variety of interventions. I also have a therapy dog in my office who loves to cuddle on the couch with patients.
James Verdery is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor located in Acton, MA. James works with children, adolescents, teenagers, and adults who struggle to manage their emotions and feel in control of their lives. His clients find themselves overwhelmed by feelings of anger, inadequacy, frustration, confusion, sadness, or loneliness. Despite their best efforts, they feel like they aren’t in control of their lives. They might suffer from low self-esteem, which leads to anxiety at school or in peer groups and can often leads to isolation. James helps these clients to grow their understanding of themselves, their emotions and learn techniques to manage their distress. Clients learn tangible skills in emotional regulation and expression. They practice challenging assumptions, ignoring self-judgments, distraction and grounding exercises, and more. James tailors his treatment style to each client’s individual needs, personalities, and preferences for engaging, effective sessions. James earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology. He is passionate about starting conversations about mental health at an early age. He strives to give clients the skills they need for a lifetime of healthy habits, including strong coping skills that allow individuals to feel meaning and joy in their lives.
My strength as a psychologist is to deeply attend to each client's emotions, thoughts, and life context. If you seek to participate in therapy with me, we will work together to create a judgment-free and safe space. In my practice of therapy, I effectively balance exploratory and supportive therapy with the latest research and evidence-based interventions. I provide psychotherapy for older adolescents (16+), adults, older adults, college students, professionals, military-affiliated individuals, couples, and families. My advanced training includes a postdoctoral fellowship at McLean Hospital, with a clinical appointment at Harvard Medical School, and an APA-accredited internship at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Alongside my private practice, my professional experience includes teaching clinical psychology at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. I am happy to answer any questions you may have or set up an initial phone conversation to determine if we both think we might work well together to meet your goals. I currently have weekday daytime and limited evening availability. I also offer both in-person and telehealth (virtual) therapy. I look forward to hearing from you!
The most important part of therapy is building a good rapport with the individual to create a safe and comfortable space. Therapy isn't always easy and neither is the decision to find a therapist; working to ensure clients are comfortable with me and helping them to identify their goals so that the treatment trajectory is predictable, but allows for space to talk about day to day events, if needed. Lastly, ensuring client and therapist personalities align is important as it only enhances the sense of safety and the capacity for positive rapport growth. There is no one intervention that is best for one person. Therefore, I operate with an eclectic combination and knowledge of multiple interventions and techniques as a way to provide the best and most effective strength based and unique treatment. Treatment interventions are individualized in order to align with the identified treatment plan and goals. Individuals have experienced a multitude of events throughout their lives that connect to and impact their capacity to function as they wish within the world today. One persons experiences are never compared or judged; everyone is always doing the best they can in those moments and I want to work with them to help increase what their best looks or feels like.

I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) who specializes in anxiety, depression, relationships, and trauma across the lifespan. My approach is warm and collaborative, rooted in evidence-based and trauma-informed practices like CBT and DBT. I also incorporate creativity, mindfulness, and the things that matter to you, whether that’s music, art, sports, or storytelling. Before opening my private practice, I served as the Clinical Program Director of a Community Crisis Stabilization (CCS) unit, where I supported individuals in acute mental health crises. Prior to that, I worked as a Trauma-Focused sports-based clinician and Program Coordinator, integrating play, movement, and expressive arts to help clients heal in ways that felt empowering and culturally responsive. I've also worked with perpetrators and victims of domestic violence and co-authored publications on Alzheimer's research in medical journals. Across every setting, my focus has always been the same: creating a safe, personalized space that focuses on the client's needs. I provide client-centered psychotherapy services that are tailored to the needs of each client. I draw from a variety of theoretical orientations including Psychodynamic (insight oriented) and behavioral (skills oriented) treatment approaches. Some areas of specialty include relationship issues, self esteem issues, life transitions, stress, anxiety, mood issues (depression), family issues and cross cultural adaptation. Starting treatment with a new mental health provider can be daunting: it involves opening up with the hope that you'll learn and grow from the experience. I have tremendous respect and admiration for my patients, as they work through challenging emotions, histories, and conflicts. At times, certain thought patterns, self-perceptions, traumatic experiences, or communication struggles can keep people from thriving and building the kind of career, relationship, or personal well-being they crave. It takes courage to work on these issues, and it is a real privilege to get to help people on their journey. I am a Harvard-trained, board-certified psychiatrist providing psychotherapy and medication management to adults in Massachusetts through telehealth. Growing up in an immigrant family and having worked in multiple clinics internationally, I highly value providing culturally competent care. It is very important to me that my patients feel seen and heard. I use a collaborative, holistic approach to care, in which I work alongside clients to define and set goals. I am transparent about the extent of what is and isn't well-known in psychiatry with the goal of helping people make informed decisions that they feel comfortable implementing. If this approach sounds like a good fit for you, please reach out!
I have a specialty working with young adults. It is one of my favorite populations to work with. I am now offering telehealth appointments, feel free to be in contact for a consultation.
