My journey has been a ride so far. I have experienced life's awe inspiring highs, and life's darkest of lows. It is through it all, through the elations of life and through its sorrow, I have learned so much. I have learned that matters of the heart can be so hard, so hurtful, and at times make life seem unfair. However I have also learned that no matter our standing in life, there is something that is universal to the human experience, and that is we are hard wired for connection. At our core we long for connection, we want to be heard, validated, and loved. My journey thus far has made me a better person, a better husband, a better father, and a better therapist. I love woodworking, I also love BBQ'ing or smoking meat in a real old school smoker, using real wood! I also love learning, love reading, and I love to write. I have been married to my best friend for going on 26 years! We have two daughters, 18 and 24. I love the University of Michigan, The Detroit Tigers, Lions, and Redwings!

Hey there! I know that therapy can feel intimidating, so let’s first acknowledge and congratulate your willingness to take a step toward healing. My goal is to come alongside and partner with you while we work through the different pains that life can bring us. I have experience working with individuals going through various struggles: depression, anxiety, relational conflict, faith issues, substance use, stress, grief, chronic pain, life transitions, self esteem. My approach to therapy is person centered and based on individual needs and goals. I will take time to develop a relationship with you to build trust and have this be a safe place. I have clinical training in cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, crisis intervention, and certified as an advanced addiction and drug counselor. Also, I am able to provide a faith-based approach to therapy for those who are interested and request this. I have worked in community mental health agencies throughout the Grand Rapids area providing outpatient therapy for the last 7 years. I graduated with my bachelors degree in social work from Ferris State University and then received my masters in social work through Michigan State. I would love to partner with you and help overcome the barriers that are holding you back. You don’t have to do this alone. Fun facts: I have a 6 year old Golden Retriever named Jubilee :) I love the outdoors, I’m a certified scuba diver, I enjoy baking, and last but not least, despite getting my masters fromMichigan State I’m a huge Michigan Football fan! Go Blue!

Why does insight alone, not lead to congruence between what you want and what you do? This is a question we would explore together. My areas of interest and experience include anxiety and depression, relationship difficulties, behavioral change through healthy habits, mindfulness, and exploring interpersonal struggles. We can focus on what resonates with you, work within any of life's domains where we believe change is possible, and go inward with mindfulness to sit with the parts of our realities that are beyond our control. Focusing on what we can control, however, is often the way forward.

Accepting the journey, we've been on and the need for change can feel overwhelming. Often therapy is seen as a one-sided conversation, let's change that narrative together. As your therapist, it is important to me to create a relationship where you feel safe and supported. We can explore what acceptance, healing, and growth means to you and create a plan to achieve those goals. I am passionate about working with teens and adults experiencing life transitions, anxiety, depression, women's mental health, PTSD, and identity development. I offer engaging, honest conversation to encourage accountability towards growth and acceptance. I believe that you have the capacity for growth when you feel seen, heard, and respected. Bring your emotional support water bottle or coffee and let's get to work on creating the best version of yourself.

I have a professional interest and passion to counsel adolescents, adults, families, and couples using evidence-based approaches and interpersonal practices. With supporting individuals overcoming trauma, mental illness, and/or substance abuse, I've learned how to aid in promoting an individual's personal sense of resilience through mindfulness techniques, along with other interventions, eliminating barriers to treatment. My clinical orientation includes, but is not limited to, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic, existentialism, and person-centered approaches. By observing how individuals’ home and school environments influenced their behaviors, I found a unique fascination and understanding in how systems influence an individual and family.

People often struggle with feelings of sadness, anxiety, and emotional responses they do not understand. Counseling can be very helpful in identifying the source of these symptoms and undoing negative effects of previous life events. . I find great fulfillment in helping individuals to gain a better understanding of who they are at their core as well as how past events and circumstances have affected them in order to move towards genuine healing. One of the most important aspects of therapy that I am committed to is creating a safe space for all individuals. Therefore, I operate from a very open-minded standpoint and I am accustomed to addressing issues relevant among diverse populations. I have had the privilege of working with individuals of various ethnic backgrounds, faiths and spiritual orientations, gender identities, and sexual orientations. All are appreciated for their unique backgrounds and personal qualities and all are welcome!
