Therapy with horses at Horse Sense is about being able to create and maintain a connected relationship. Our therapy utilizes both the physiology and psychology of the horse to heal the physiology and psychology of the human. This experiential therapy gets beyond simply talking about challenges and instead participants learn by doing, often reaching positive change more quickly than through traditional therapy approaches.
After trauma, we reach for whatever coping skill is closest in order to survive. We may turn to substances, self-harm, intellectualizing, perfectionism, etc. This helps us soothe, distract, and numb from feelings of shame, guilt, anger and fear. Still, our unprocessed emotions can overwhelm–morphing into anxiety, depression, rage, dissociation, or hyper-vigilance. However, this only represents a part of us and our experiences. We contain creativity, empathy, resilience, & intuition. Through our strengths, we increase our tolerance, release survival skills that no longer serve us, and return to our most liberated and aligned self. I specialize in addiction, anxiety, trauma, marriage counseling, and depression. I am also trained in Brainspotting, a trauma treatment, which involves less invasive talk therapy & quicker response times for healing, when compared to EMDR. For marriage & couples counseling, I am trained in the Gottman Method. We all have an innate and intuitive ability to heal and transform, yet healing is not a destination. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and have worked in counseling focusing on grief for 14 years. In working with grief and loss I have found that this opening provides opportunities to recreate yourself because parts of your world have changed. I also used techniques found in Mindfulness that helps to focus on the present moments versus worries about past or future. I believe in the ability within each individual to overcome the challenges that they face during the course of their lives. There should be a genuine relationship between the therapist and the client. This purpose is the creation of a safe place for the client to grow in their awareness of themselves and their environment. I believe in these theories because they center on the individual and their innate power to overcome their personal challenges. All of these theories and techniques give the client the confidence to realize that they do have the power to create their own reality and make positive choices. It is vital that the client feels a connection with their therapist to provide the trust involved in making the necessary changes in themselves.
