I don’t believe that any one modality of therapy works best for everybody. I believe in getting to know my client, understanding what works and does not work for them, and keeping an open line of communication with what is and isn’t helping. That is how I believe the best treatment and treatment planning occurs: when both parties are able to honestly express their thoughts on the treatment process and are willing to explore different avenues in order to bring about the most healing. I believe in person-centered care. I believe in helping a client feel comfortable, welcome, and safe when they are in therapy, and I strive to be a positive support for them. Without my personal life’s experiences with pain, anxiety, depression, and a multitude of other struggles, I know I would not be the therapist that I am today. I believe that I have a large amount of empathy for individuals who go through these types of struggles, and I feel that I can help them not only from a professional level, but also from a human-being to another human-being level. The human experience is not always an easy one to go through. It is my pleasure and privilege to help individuals walk through their struggles and to let them know that they are not alone. By providing them with support, empathy, techniques for success and a safe place to come each week, I believe that I can be a part of the healing in a clients life and that is one of the greatest blessings that I could ever think of participating in.

Many mental health issues are related to a trauma response in the brain and body. Trauma is often conceptualized as one single event or experience that causes intense fear or distress. However, not all people who experience these kinds of events develop trauma symptoms, and many people who do experience trauma symptoms cannot identify a single event such as this. Another way to understand trauma symptoms is that they occur when an individual’s context overwhelms their nervous system’s ability to cope. This forces the nervous system to utilize strategies to try to bring the body back into balance. These strategies are usually useful or adaptive in the moment, but unhealthy and disruptive in the long run. The coping patterns can be related to addiction, disordered eating, the way we emotionally engage in relationships, or the chronic up-regulation (anxiety) or down-regulation (depression) of our nervous system. All are attempts to process the energy stored in the nervous system in response to stressors. Together we will utilize elements of mindfulness, somatic expression, Family Systems Theory, and Narrative therapy to develop new strategies to express emotion, regulate the nervous system, and communicate effectively with ourselves and with the people in our lives.

I have a professional interest and passion to counsel adolescents, adults, families, and couples using evidence-based approaches and interpersonal practices. With supporting individuals overcoming trauma, mental illness, and/or substance abuse, I've learned how to aid in promoting an individual's personal sense of resilience through mindfulness techniques, along with other interventions, eliminating barriers to treatment. My clinical orientation includes, but is not limited to, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic, existentialism, and person-centered approaches. By observing how individuals’ home and school environments influenced their behaviors, I found a unique fascination and understanding in how systems influence an individual and family.

During our sessions together, I will support you in exploring the many parts of you and how they came to be. I will work with you to identify the negative messages connected to these parts of you. We will form a relationship with these parts and create a safe place for all of you to be seen, heard, and understood. In this safe place, you will heal yourself. Developing my own internal resources has helped me to move through some very difficult times as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Using evidence based research, I provide care that values every part of you and respects where you came from. In those moments of pain and struggle and self-discovery, I will help you to choose yourself. I seek to create a safe and inclusive space for black-bodied individuals, first generation immigrants, LGBTQ+ folks, survivors of trauma, sex workers, and clients who are struggling with relationship and intimacy issues. My approach to mental health care is rooted in anti-oppressive and decolonizing frameworks. The treatment modalities that I use have been found to be effective across many cultures, ages, genders, and experiences. I am here to support my clients in rediscovering themselves, strengthening their mind-body connection, and living the life they have always wanted.
