I also work on post-trauma growth for those with a history of trauma. My approach is both "bottom up" (focusing on how your body/biology is responding to stress) and "top down" (working with your thoughts and mind to better manage the way you are feeling/thinking). I am heavily influenced by my studies in mindfulness meditation and bring that approach into our work. I have a strong interest in neuroscience as well as spirituality. At MSC we believe there's more than one way to grow. We offer office based therapy as well as equine assisted psychotherapy, expressive arts, sand tray, and yoga for trauma recovery. We have 11 clinicians with different backgrounds and specialties, and 4 of them are located at our farm in Ayden. I now have over five years post-grad experience providing individual and group therapy. I continued providing a full range of services that helped individuals of various ages and families overcome addiction and mental health concerns along the way. Since graduating with my Masters of Social Work in 2016 from UNC Charlotte, I have worked primarily with college aged students within university counseling centers. I also enjoy supporting future generations in our mental health field by serving as an adjunct professor at UNC Charlotte since 2021. My name is Shameca D. Ricks . I am a native of the Drakes Community in Battleboro, NC. In 2000, I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a minor in Gerontological Studies. Upon graduation, I worked for nine years as a Director of Social Services within nursing homes and rehabilitation centers. I worked closely with hospice residents, assisting families in making decisions surrounding end of life care. In 2013, I graduated with a Master's Degree in Social Work specializing in Substance Abuse Treatment from East Carolina University. Recently, I have worked with children and adolescents with childhood mental health disorders. I also work with adults providing individual, marital, and family counseling. I am also an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist who has experience in working with all gender identities across this spectrum.
