People say I put them at ease and quickly bring a new perspective to the way they have been thinking about a problem. I have a holistic, individualized approach—weaving together therapeutic interventions tailored to your unique needs. It would be an honor to help you navigate a difficult challenge or circumstance.

I am a warm, straightforward therapist focused on providing effective treatment. I work to connect genuinely with each of my patients because I believe the first component of effective treatment is the formation of a trusting, non-judgmental therapeutic relationship. With this relationship as the foundation, we can then collaboratively determine your goals and take measurable steps to achieving the change you want in your life. I specialize in the treatment of adolescents and young adults struggling with depression, sexual and gender identity, suicidality, emotion regulation, anxiety, eating disorders, relationship problems, family issues, academic and occupational stress, and life transitions. I specialize in Dialectical and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. These approaches seek to provide practical skills to manage the emotions and thoughts that are interfering with our lives. I have also trained in trauma based and exposure protocols. In addition, I have specific training in supporting those who identify as gender non-conforming and offer both assessment and supportive counseling to individuals and families. I appreciate the courage it takes to talk with a therapist. Therapy is a very active process, with both the client and the therapist putting in considerable effort, and I will work with you to create the treatment environment that best meets your individual needs.

Alex utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach using skills obtained from a plethora of working environments. While primarily utilizing a strength based, person-centered approach, Alex is also proficient in the teachings of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness, and Systems therapy, among other modalities. College students today face so many pressures: family and peer expectations, major life decisions, an onslaught of social media messages, and multiple socio-political crises. Though these problems are daunting, you do not need to face them alone. I would be grateful to accompany you as you respond to the questions and challenges impacting your life. In my work thus far, my clients have often felt a sense of separation or space open up between themselves and their problems. I have helped people feel “known” for who they want to be in life, separate and apart from the influence of depression, anxiety, failure, addiction, conflict, hardship, etc. This gives them more room to explore the forgotten or not-yet-developed stories of their hopes, passions, values, and purposes, which can contribute to a feeling of empowerment in facing whatever difficult experiences brought them to therapy. Though I help people navigate many different kinds of mental and emotional challenges, I have a particular interest in having therapy conversations with folks 1) concerned about the environment, 2) interested in or wondering about their spirituality/ religion, and 3) who identify as men or who are dealing with the effects of patriarchy.
I’m Alexandra Casamassima (a mouthful, I know), a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. More specifically, I help people create positive change in their lives when they are struggling. I have expertise in working with women. This includes college students or millennials going through a “quarter life crisis,” the pregnancy and postpartum period, and beyond. I support women in exploring their history and revealing patterns that may be impacting their emotions or relationships, or just help tackle a difficult season of life. I am not your typical therapist, and we will not be interpreting dreams from a couch. Therapy should not be an awkward and stale experience. Expect therapy with me to be a compassionate and safe space to process what you’re going through. However, I am not a sit and nod therapist. I will be real. I will challenge you in the areas I think we need to re-evaluate. I will use humor. I might curse here and there. While I have extensive education and training that has prepared me for this role, my experience has mostly taught me that YOU are the expert of your life. You have all the strengths, capabilities, and life experiences you need to get you where you want to go. My skills involve utilizing those strengths, giving you the tools to cope with what you’re struggling with, and elicit the change you want to see. I do not have a magic wand (otherwise my rates would be much higher), but if you put in the work during the therapy process, transformation is possible. If you’re reading this, chances are you are suffering in some way. Maybe you’re experiencing anxiety, maybe you’re overwhelmed with being a mom, or maybe you know you’re just not getting the most out of life. Please reach out if you’d like to take the first step to make positive change.
