I have been a Clinical Psychologist for over 23 years and have both the educational and work experience to treat children, adolescents, adults, and families. I often build trust and rapport quickly, while instilling hope and optimism. Therapy is performed both in person and tele therapeutically, helping to ameliorate symptoms and improve overall functioning in those that I serve. Clients will tell you that I am nonjudgmental, open minded, approachable, live by Christian values and I am respectful of all people. I continue to work hard to be an ally, learning from others as they learn from me. Leaning on my extensive experience helping parents and being a parent myself, I apply structural family therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy as we work on their parental effectiveness, active listening, behavioral management, co-parenting, and affective expression. I really enjoy and have found success in performing couples counseling and often have evening hours that make it easier for both partners to get into therapy consistently. For years, clients have felt relaxed and heard in the sessions, making continuing therapy seamless for many. Regarding diagnoses, I have helped ameliorate symptoms for clients with ADHD, Anxiety, Bipolar, Depression, GAD, PTSD, OCD, ODD, and adjustment disorders, etc.. I have some experience with substance abuse diagnoses, but only secondary as this is not my expertise. Currently, I am accepting the following insurances: Aetna, BCBS, Blue Cross Complete, BCN, McLaren, Mclaren Medicaid, Medicare, Michigan Medicaid, Molina, Multiplan, Optum, and PHP (Out-Of-Network coverage). Finally, being located near East Lansing, I am in a prime location for college students and have helped many with a broad range of issues and have had many clients state that they have had therapists in the past, but have felt more connected to, listened to, and made more progress herein.
Hi, thanks for stopping by! I value a person-centered approach that is tailored to your unique needs. I am invested in cultivating a warm and gentle environment for you to feel comfortable bringing your full self to sessions. I work with both adults and adolescents, and can see clients in person or over telehealth. I earned my master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Ball State University, where I worked with college students in a university counseling setting. My background includes addressing issues such as anxiety, depression, identity development, and relationship concerns. I've supported individuals in processing intense emotions, building positive strategies for improving mental health, and building compassion for all parts of self. I also have a strong commitment to supporting individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. I look forward to joining you on your path to healing and growth.
Hello! I am a trauma therapist for women navigating motherhood and life transitions. I specializes in supporting women navigating motherhood, grief and loss, neurodivergence, and life transitions. I work with adult women who may appear to be managing life well on the outside, but feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck internally. Many of the clients I work with are processing trauma, adjusting to major life transitions, navigating ADHD or autism as adults, or finding their way through the emotional complexities of pregnancy, postpartum, and motherhood. I am particularly passionate about supporting women who are learning to better understand their emotional and physical responses, reconnect with their sense of self, and develop new ways of relating to their experiences.
I work with teens and adults who feel anxious, emotionally exhausted, discouraged, or worn down by chronic pain. Together, we pursue healing that honors both your mental health and your faith. My approach is grounded in clinical psychology, with the option to thoughtfully integrate Christian spirituality and/or address religious trauma in a way that is respectful, collaborative, and aligned with your values. As therapy progresses, you’ll begin to notice meaningful shifts. Life, work, and relationships will feel lighter and steadier. Moments of genuine joy will return. When difficult thoughts or emotions arise, they won’t pull you under. Instead of spiraling into overthinking or self-criticism, you’ll respond with clarity, wisdom, and self-compassion. The harsh inner voice softens, replaced by one that is kinder and more truthful. The world may still feel uncertain at times, but it will no longer feel hopeless. If you’re wondering whether we might be a good fit, I invite you to learn more about my story and approach.

A lot of college students feel like they should have everything figured out by now. The truth is, most people don’t. College can bring a lot of pressure, academically, socially, and personally. You might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, lonely, or navigating relationship challenges, or questioning your direction about what comes next. Many students I work with come to therapy because something in their life doesn’t feel quite right. Sometimes that means exploring stress happening right now, and other times it means getting curious about past experiences or childhood dynamics that may still be shaping patterns in relationships, self-confidence, or the way you handle difficult emotions. My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in helping you better understand yourself while also building practical tools to manage stress and feel steadier. Therapy with me doesn’t have to feel stiff or overly clinical; humor, swearing, and showing up as your real self are all welcome here. My office is located by a GVSU Laker Line bus stop and is about a 10-minute walk. You don’t have to sort everything out on your own. Reach out if you're ready to start getting the support you need!
College was a tricky time for me. It was a time of loss, big decisions, and anxiety. I really needed all the support I could get. I remember it well and was really close to quitting. Fast forward many years, as I've learned some incredibly useful therapy skills as an adult, I hope to pass these skills on to those that are in search of them. We are all imperfect humans and we can all benefit from the skills of self-compassion and therapy, even if it is simply to understand ourselves better then make life decisions based on that new information. If you're interested in creative ways to approach therapy, particularly with art therapy and mindfulness-based approaches, I'd love to work with you. I work through a platform called Headway to help you use your insurance (more insurance options to come in the near future).

As we journey through life, even in our most painful moments it can still feel like a huge risk to seek help from a new place. That is why I strive to provide a therapy experience for my clients that honors that risk. An experience where you are able to show up as your authentic self and work towards personal growth alongside someone who is attuned to your thoughts, feelings, and needs. Across my time, I have worked primarily with college students as well as a wide variety of adults in age and background often struggling with anxiety, depression, stress management, emotion regulation, identity development, family of origin concerns, relationship concerns, life transitions and more. My approach to therapy hinges on creating a strong therapeutic relationship that can serve as a safe haven for my clients. To me this means a relationship where you can feel seen and accepted as you are and where, with the support of another, you can process and manage experiences and emotions that may have felt too confusing, overwhelming, or frightening to do alone. From this base of safety, we’ll venture out to understand together the emotional, relational, systemic, and other factors that have contributed to the roots of your current concerns and the cycles and stuck places you may be caught in. My hope is to not only help you build the skills to manage your present distress and reach your goals, but to also help you move towards a life of greater emotional balance, self-compassion, and secure connections with others. Wherever you are at in your life journey, I consider it a real gift to meet you there and be a source of support in this time!
Establishing a strong working relationship is essential to positive therapeutic outcomes. I firmly believe that therapy works best when you match well on a personal level. Adjusting to college is hard. There's a lot of pressure to do well academically, socially, personally...and it can be helpful to have an unbiased person to vent to and talk about what you're struggling with. I specialize in treating individuals struggling with primary and secondary trauma. I use a multifaceted approach to therapy to meet my clients where they are and to suit their individual needs, whether trauma is a main focus or not.
Taking the first step toward therapy can feel overwhelming, especially when you are already juggling classes, relationships, and figuring out your next steps. But you don’t have to navigate it all alone. I believe therapy is a collaborative partnership where you are the expert on your own life. My goal is to provide a safe, non-judgmental, and deeply supportive space where you can unpack whatever is weighing you down. I often remind my clients that healing isn’t about erasing the past or pretending everything is perfect; it’s about learning how to live fully right now, even while you are working through old wounds. We all have chapters of our lives shaped by the pain of betrayal, loss, or stress—but those chapters do not get to dictate the rest of your story.
Life can be overwhelming when you are balancing the demands of being a student, parent, partner, or professional. These roles become even more complex when trauma, substance use, anxiety, or depression are part of the picture. If you feel like these challenges are making it harder to navigate your daily life, please know that you don’t have to manage them alone. At Joshua Colby Counseling, I provide a safe, affirming space where evidence-based practice meets genuine human connection. My goal is to offer real, proven solutions tailored to your unique experiences—including concerns surrounding sexuality and identity. Whether you are looking to process past experiences or develop tools for a better future, I am here to support your growth without judgment. If you are ready to take that next step, reach out today. I look forward to hearing your story and helping you achieve the life you deserve.
