Therapists for college students near 97203
College was supposed to be fun, exciting, adventurous! All you seem to feel though is dread, lost, on edge and alone searching for your place in the world. College is the perfect time to work towards who you want to be for the rest of your life and I am here to help!
I love working with college students. I worked exclusively with students for 14 years and have been a therapist for 19 years. I really struggled in college myself and enjoy helping students thru this challenging time. Anxiety, motivation, time and stress management are all tough during college as well as how that constant stress effects your relationships and self care and self compassion. Helping out with career and academic direction can be part of our work too. This is also a time that gender identity and sexuality and body image issues can arise. I can help support all sorts of folks (including with neurodiversity and individuals with ADHD and chronic health issues) to stay healthy and regulated during high stress.
Champion Family Therapy is a small, locally owned practice founded by Jessica Champion, LMFT in 2018. Prior to opening Champion Family Therapy, Jessica Champion had the vision for fifteen years of creating a mental health therapy practice that was family-centered. She saw the need for a clinic that would address the challenges of individuals, couples and families, by incorporating the many facets of recovery, including relational dynamics and core beliefs transferred through generations. From this vision, Champion Family Therapy was born. At Champion Family Therapy, we understand that most people seek therapy after unwelcome challenges in their lives. We are always moved by the desire for change and the risk it takes to make that call. It is our job to meet you where you are with competence and compassion.
We are a multidisciplinary group of experienced clinicians. Are you in need of a therapist who will be with you during difficult times like relationship issues or emotional trauma? Our Therapists can be that helpful, knowledgeable, and supportive professional that you need. We offer counseling that promotes increased self-awareness, understanding and a state of well-being in individuals, couples, and families. Our therapeutic techniques include exploring repetitive themes, recurring situations, familial, and behavioral patterns to assist you in developing more effective methods of relating to yourself and others.
I work with individuals and relationships from a systemic, decolonial, and anti-oppressive lens. This means that when working with you, I will take into account all the micro and macro systems around you that are affecting you on your day to day, and making you feel like there is something wrong with you. I work with individuals who experience stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma due to problems with their family of origin, major life changes and transitions, relationship issues, work stressors, and the state of the world. I like to pay close attention to how our current social and political climate is also affecting you at a personal level and at a communal level. I do my best work with people who are ready to… - look closely at the stories they've been carrying and gently question which ones no longer serve them, - discover and honor their own needs—not just those of others, - sort through the values they've inherited from family, culture, or society to uncover the ones that truly belong to them, - align values, thoughts, and actions in ways that create deeper integrity and wholeness, and practice setting healthy boundaries and asking for their needs to be met with clarity and self-respect. I may not be the right fit for you if… - you are seeking couples therapy for infidelity or relational violence, - you are unwilling or not yet ready to look at your own patterns or make changes, - you want quick fixes without engaging in the deeper inner work, - or you are looking for therapy that does not center justice, culture, or liberation.
THE WAYS IN WHICH I PROVIDE THERAPY, COUNSELING, CAREER, AND LIFE COACHING I use an integrated holistic approach to work with individuals - adolescents & adults, couples, and families. I provide a neutral safe space to listen to your concerns and to hear about your goals. I offer reassurance, encouragement, connection, and acceptance to support the positive changes and progress you want to make in your life. SOLUTION FOCUS I assist in finding answers, support the healing process, and aid in your personal exploration, growth, and development with a continuous positive regard. Together we create an individualized plan and customized course of action. I aid clients in forming new understanding and behaviors for achieving goals, to overcome existing barriers, positively navigate through and beyond current life challenges, and become aware of inner strengths. I assist clients to discover tools they already possess and gain new ones for making positive changes. I help identify patterns keeping them stuck, immobilized, or that may not be serving them well. MY PROMISE AND PHILOSOPHY I promise to be there for you every step of your journey whether in counseling, therapy, or coaching. My goal is to help you grow from your struggles, heal from your pain, become empowered, and move forward to where you want to be in your life. I will act as a compassionate collaborative partner in the process of healing, pursuing greater well-being, and achieving your goals. I will work with you in building a positive helpful relationship that includes respect and regard for who you are as an individual. I sincerely celebrate positive changes that you are working towards, have made, and will accomplish.
Are you looking for support and compassion as you explore and process your experiences and struggles? We all experience times of difficulty and challenge throughout our lives and benefit from the support of therapy. My hope is to create a connected relationship, provide a comfortable and safe space, and to work with you collaboratively to move toward your hopes and goals. Your holistic self (e.g. culture, sexuality, gender, family of origin, etc.) and experiences are very important to understand and honor through our work together. I work with people struggling with trauma/PTSD, depression, anxiety, grief, and relationships. I have extensive experience working with queer (LBGBTQIA+) people, in individual and relational (couples, poly) therapy. I am experienced providing gender affirming support for gender identity, including letters of support for gender affirming medical treatment. A positive and helpful therapy experience is significantly influenced by the relationship we develop. I would be happy to speak with you about your experiences and hopes, my approach to therapy, and the process to expect in therapy in order to help you assess whether I will be a good fit for your needs.

Therapy is a journey of healing, growth, self discovery and so much more. Each person brings with them a different story and unique perspective, which gives us the opportunity to meet you where you are in that moment, with empathy and support. At Steps to Change, LLC we frequently work with people around life transitions, neurodivergence, anxiety, depression, gender and sexuality, acute and chronic trauma issues, self empowerment, parenting, chronic illness (invisible and visible) as well as grief and loss. We enjoy working with individuals in a welcoming space that is created together through the therapeutic relationship. We believe the role of the therapist is to be there as a guide in the process of helping you trust your inner self more and assist in learning new coping strategies to better manage the adversities in life. All services are via Tele-Health, which gives the Client the comfort of their items and space during the sessions, often helping to feel more secure. Please email to schedule an appointment as written communication works best. Hours of availability are Monday-Wednesday with no evening availability. Our hope is that we are able to work together towards reaching your goals and creating change through interpersonal growth.
Wanting to implement change in your life or relationships can feel challenging and overwhelming. Acknowledging that we are in a place where talking to a therapist seems helpful is an act of courage and also provides some relief that we are taking steps to help ourselves with the difficulties that arise in life. I believe we all story our lives against the backdrop of our personal discourse, family discourse, and societal discourse. Some of the stories we identify with have been beneficial yet others have been less helpful or even hinder us to reach the happiness and contentment we seek.
Trauma can be an invisible wound that can affect many parts of our lives we don’t even realize. I work with clients with depression, anxiety, adoption triad concerns, and trauma-related issues. Change can be hard. Having the courage to reach out and discuss your inner pain and anxiety is the first step. I want to help you work through your past painful experiences, feelings of shame, and traumatic events so that you can create a new life path. I believe each person has their own pace, and am willing to find therapies and strategies that work for you. My approach is open-minded, trauma-based, cognitive, and holistic. I started my career in psychology and counseling when I experienced a suicide in my family. It gave me the courage to make changes for myself, and help people around me who were also suffering grief, loss, and depression. I’m an advocate of mental health issues, a proud adoptee, and a supporter of the arts. **I only accept insurance in the state of North Carolina**

The college years can be some of the most overwhelming — academic pressure, perfectionism, anxiety, homesickness, identity shifts, and major life changes, often layered on top of experiences you carry with you from before you even got here. Whatever you're going through, I'll meet you with honesty and genuine warmth — as well as humor and laughter along the way. We'll work toward your goals as a team, with a treatment plan designed to meet your unique needs. This plan will always take into account your background, identity, and lived experience. This is a space space, and everybody is welcome here. I commonly work with students navigating: - Anxiety and perfectionism - Depression - Trauma and past experiences - Chronic illness and chronic pain - Homesickness and life transitions - Identity and self-worth Therapy with me is supportive and nonjudgmental — and direct. Expect to be gently challenged. Together we'll work on dismantling negative core beliefs, shifting unhelpful thought patterns, building healthy boundaries, and finding coping skills that work and fit in to your daily life . Our first session is about you. I'll walk you through what to expect and your rights as a client, and you'll have space to ask questions. Building trust and rapport is the most important step to make our work together possible — so we'll begin the trust-building process while I gather some important background. My goal is that when you leave your first session, you'll feel heard, understood, and genuinely hopeful that growth and healing are possible.

I enjoy working with students at the collegiate level. It can be such an exciting time of life, but can also present unique challenges that create uncertainty and impact mental health. I am here to support this adjustment period, whether you are struggling with anxiety or depression, or experiencing executive function challenges. I have the ability to see you via telehealth or in person, and am able to collaborate with your provider at home (if you're attending from out of state) to continue or adjust medications while in the state of Oregon.
What do you do when what everyone calls "the best years of your life' just aren't?? The transition from home to college is an exciting one, but one that brings with it many new experiences...leaving home (sometimes for the first time), living more independently, meeting a whole world of new people, and learning more about yourself...your strengths and weaknesses. As a college student you often face adversities such as a lack of stability, increased social and pressures, and a strong push towards academic hyper-achievement. Together with familial and social (media) pressure college students often experience changes in sleep, eating and energy patterns, irritability, a loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed, and substance abuse. Knowing when you need support, and taking the initiative to actually get that help is an important first step in figuring things out. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, depression, homesickness, finding your people or just trying to figure yourself out I hope that I can help.
I pride myself on making therapy approachable and actually helpful. I know that starting therapy can feel daunting. In our sessions, you can expect a conversational, warm, and guided approach backed by actionable tools that go far beyond journaling or breathing exercises. I work with virtual clients located anywhere in AZ & OR. WA coming soon! You can easily schedule with me online by clicking the My Website link.
I offer a safe and consistent virtual space for adults of all ages to work through current stress, manage issues like anxiety, depression, and relationship issues, and to resolve past trauma. My practice offers flexibility and the option to heal in an environment you can control, while my skills and experience allow me to foster a connection between us that is real and lasting. My clients often use the space to process their needs, to practice creating conscious connection between their minds and bodies, and to explore strategies that will offer them freedom and relief from traumatic stress. We'll have purposeful conversations that help build insight and clarity around your thoughts, feelings, and other internal experiences. Using virtual, trauma informed strategies based on current neuroscience such as EMDR, you can resolve past trauma, often leading to improvements in mood, energy levels, and ability to manage daily stress. Whether you're processing your experiences or learning new strategies, our sessions will take on a predictable, reliable flow that you can count on for help and support. If you have the sense we’d be a good fit for your needs, please feel free to reach out to set up a free consultation. I look forward to hearing from you!
