Therapists for college students near Atlanta, GA
In a world that is constantly changing, it can be difficult to keep a pace that feels comfortable and productive. If you have reached a point where old coping skills no longer work, or you are looking to find healthier ways to cope with life challenges, I'm here to help. In therapy we will work together to develop awareness of how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors affect one another, build skills to handle difficult emotions and make behavior change, and practice these skills in a variety of situations so you may be able to support yourself moving forward. True growth and healing happen in the most uncomfortable spaces at times. However, you do not have to wait until you are in the eye of a storm to seek counseling services. Embarking on the therapeutic journey is an important life decision and finding a therapist whose expertise fits your needs is just as vital. Therapy is a collaborative process, and we work to assist clients with achieving goals by cultivating self-awareness, identifying personal strengths, and gaining new perspectives. Kendra is a National Board Certified Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor, and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional based in Atlanta GA. Her areas of expertise include anxiety, depression, and complex trauma. She has a passion for working with clients experiencing anxiety, low self-esteem, complex trauma, career/life transitions, PTSD, and depression.
I help people who are feeling overwhelmed get back on track. I assist young adults anxious about work or life and who need support and tools to move ahead. Clients of all ages may be going through challenges or life transitions that show up as anxiety or depression or just feeling stuck. I also work with individuals and couples who are stuck in relationship patterns that no longer work for them. I’m knowledgeable about a variety of techniques such as cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based therapy, but I use a variety of approaches to helping my clients. As you might expect from my location in the heart of Atlanta, my clients are a diverse group of men and women. I strive to be an anti-racist therapist responsive to the needs of Black clients and other people of color. As a gay man I strongly support empowerment of women. LGBTQ concerns are a special focus of mine; you have the right to expect your therapist to be comfortable and knowledgeable about your concerns. I’ve been in private practice in Atlanta for more than 30 years. I work out of comfortable and tranquil home office in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood. (I also offer video sessions if that’s more convenient.) My clients find me engaged, supportive and nonjudgmental. Whether you’ve made use of counseling and therapy before or are seeking a counselor for the first time, I welcome questions you might have about working together.
My job is about hope. I help students struggling with anxiety, depression, or stress. These symptoms can interfere with your schoolwork and wellness. Many of my former clients tell me that they were surprised and relieved to feel so much better after therapy. They were unsure if they would ever find relief from the challenges they had. That is why I do what I do. It is a joy to share in that journey of healing. I have found the most important thing is to tailor my approach to each person's specific needs. Therapy is not one size fits all. For example, I often find expressive arts to be helpful when overcoming trauma. I also have a special place in my heart for those who struggle with eating disorders and self harm.

You feel the pressure to be in control all the time…with food, relationships, your job, your appearance. You may be fed up with melting down over a picture of yourself, feeling like you can’t stop thinking about food no matter what you do, or feeling hopeless that things will ever get better. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to go clothes shopping without fear. You’re ready to start spending time with friends again. Most of all, you’re ready to feel fulfilled and have the life you want. Clients come to me looking for a therapist who “gets” it, because therapy should be a place where you feel safe and supported to explore the roots of your relationship with food and body. Sessions with me are interactive and collaborative, and we always go at your pace, never pushing to a place you don’t feel ready to be. As an experienced eating disorder therapist, I believe that all women deserve to have permission (from themselves) to live full and empowered lives. You don’t have to keep feeling like a failure because your body has changed, and you don’t have to do it alone. Reach out today for a free 15-minute consultation. I can’t wait to hear from you.

Struggling to adjust to college life? Feeling stuck? Wondering why you keep finding yourself in the same struggle, experiencing the same pain or relationship issues, yet again? Or perhaps you feel invisible or unheard, or can't find your own voice? I work with clients to explore how unresolved issues from the past impact the present. In an open and safe environment, we explore authentic feelings and lost aspects of self often censored in general society, toward greater personal insight, growth and change. An accepting and validating therapy relationship can be a key element in the healing of old wounds and opening up of new possibilities. I work primarily from a psychodynamic and relational orientation to work with the deep long-term wounds, traumas, and patterns that shape self-perceptions and influence current experiences and struggles. I will incorporate other modalities as applicable. All genders, sexual orientations, and races/ethnicities welcome. I also offer Brainspotting, a cutting edge EMDR derivative, neurobiological trauma treatment. I am intensively trained in psychoanalytic theory and practice, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couples. I also bring over 25 years of corporate experience to my understanding of real world problems that clients struggle with.

Welcome to Growth Tree Counseling! My name is Amanda L. Patterson. I have over 8 years of experience working with children, young adults, & families with their mental health needs. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Georgia State University in 2013 & went on to earn my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Mercer University in 2016. I specialize in helping children, teens, and young adults age 4-25. Are you a young adult going through a tough transitional period or facing challenges in your life right now? Do you feel overwhelmed by stress, anxiety, or uncertainty about the future? Are you finding it hard to manage relationships or make important decisions? Have you experienced traumatic events that continue to impact your daily life? Do you have trouble setting and achieving personal or academic/professional goals? Are you feeling disconnected or isolated from others? Would you like support in exploring your identity, values, or beliefs? Are you struggling to communicate effectively with your family or friends? Are you open to exploring new ways to improve your mental health and well-being?
I help self-motivated young women “have it all” while managing the ups and downs of life. To “have it all” means something different for everyone. I help women redefine and create their own definition of “having it all” and set and achieve realistic goals. Too often we allow society to dictate our careers, marriage, and family. There is pressure to be the ideal candidate for employers and the ideal mate for a spouse. We try so hard to be an idealistic version of ourselves, yet somehow, we are left feeling dissatisfied or as if something is missing. We then point out and focus on every void in our lives (i.e. romantic relationship, dream job, great friends, etc.) and overlook what is good in our lives. I help women build confidence to create their own set of standards for their lives without guilt and shame. We work to dispel beliefs about who you should be and create a narrative of acceptance for who you are presently and who you are becoming.
I am currently accepting new clients! Poor boundaries, putting others first, fear of outcomes, and lack of self-trust leads to people-pleasing, perfectionism, self-doubt, hurt feelings, resentment, poor self-esteem, unhealthy relationships, anxiety, depression, etc., ultimately is what leads people to therapy! Most people have not learned how to handle uncomfortable situations in healthy ways that feel comfortable specifically to them. Allow me to guide you with trusting yourself enough to choose you each time regardless of the outcome! When we put ourselves first, we will show up as our best selves! I specialize in a wide range of issues including depression/anxiety, coping with life transitions, communication in relationships, and parenting. I enjoy working with women, men, couples, and families with a myriad of challenges. I provide a supportive, culturally competent, judgment-free environment, specifically tailored to your individual needs. I incorporate a person-centered approach with interventions from, solution-focused, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. My clients love my down-to-earth personality which allows them to let their guard down, trust and share! We are all different for a reason and learning self-awareness is key to understanding and accepting, changing thoughts and behaviors.
Are you feeling overwhelmed? anxious? depressed? Is your mind racing and your body tense? Wonder why you can't just feel happy? Therapy looks a lot like a conversation with a good friend. But the gift is that it's a one-way friendship where it's all about you! You get to talk about whatever you want and need to say. I get to listen carefully, reflect what I hear to make sure you feel understood, affirm and encourage your strengths, and ask questions to clarify or help you think more deeply about your concerns. I have significant experience working with anxiety, depression, interpersonal concerns, and wellness goals. I believe that you are the expert on you, but we all need help to move through this life. I can offer you support, encouragement, an outside perspective, and space to explore. While life presents challenges, I believe that you are fundamentally strong and resilient. I'd love to partner with you on your journey. Please reach out and let's see if we'd be a good fit together.

I believe an individual has the tools to live the fulfilling life they want to live and I, as the therapist, can help guide him/her to achieve his/her goals. I create a non-judgmental therapeutic atmosphere and I make sure to listen to my clients. Throughout my years as a counselor, I have had the pleasure of counseling individuals who need help with developing effective coping skills for their anxiety and depressive symptoms. I am also passionate about individuals who are going through bereavement and grief; no one should have to experience loss alone. Infertility is an area I am also passionate about because I have also experienced it. I also have experience in counseling individuals who have experienced trauma. My non-judgmental atmosphere in the therapeutic relationship, my skills as a competent counselor, and my natural desire to help individuals can be assets for my client's healing process. Sometimes we need someone to listen to us vent about life stressors, and I am here for that. To get to know me more, feel free to check out my website. Hope to see you soon! I am part of the Path referral network, which means that when you reach out, my team will get back to you quickly to schedule our first session. Through Path, I am in-network for most commercial insurances, and the average cost of a session for clients who use their insurance is less than $30.
