Our experiences shape how we think, feel, and participate in the world. From individual personality, to family of origin, to cultural context, the interaction of internal and external can result in feelings of depression or anxiety, difficulty in relationships, or confusion about identity. Sometimes all that’s needed is short-term help that focuses on developing better coping skills, and other times deep, long-term, insight-oriented work is necessary to disentangle complex lifelong difficulties. I focus on developing a trusting therapeutic relationship, which sets the foundation to process painful experiences and celebrate meaningful change. By exploring the richness of your internal world and your interpersonal experiences, we will gain insight into the underlying forces that influence the way you think, feel, and behave. I will collaborate with you to manage overwhelming feelings, integrate traumatic experiences, and help identify and remove the obstacles that block your natural ability to grow. With new clarity, you'll be able to break unhelpful patterns, heal from psychological wounds, and move forward in your life with mindful intentionality.

I work with folks that are in the middle of change—whether that’s navigating substance use, questioning long-held beliefs, or rebuilding after a major life shift. As a master’s level student therapist pursuing an LPC, I take a solution-focused, creative approach that blends evidence-based techniques like CBT and IFS with real-world problem-solving. Therapy isn’t just about talking—it’s about movement, perspective shifts, and practical steps forward. Through curiosity, structure, and a focus on what works, we’ll navigate this together. If you’re ready to start—or even just thinking about it—let’s talk.

I have a professional interest and passion to counsel adolescents, adults, families, and couples using evidence-based approaches and interpersonal practices. With supporting individuals overcoming trauma, mental illness, and/or substance abuse, I've learned how to aid in promoting an individual's personal sense of resilience through mindfulness techniques, along with other interventions, eliminating barriers to treatment. My clinical orientation includes, but is not limited to, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic, existentialism, and person-centered approaches. By observing how individuals’ home and school environments influenced their behaviors, I found a unique fascination and understanding in how systems influence an individual and family.

The hope of The Counseling Center of Great Lakes is to be able to offer support and encouragement to people in their communities by helping them find hope and healing through professional counseling. Hillary earned a Master of Arts in Counseling degree from Spring Arbor University (2020) and is licensed in the state of Michigan as a Limited Licensed Professional Counselor (LLPC) and the State of Illinois as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). After starting CCGL with her co-owners in 2020, her family transitioned to Illinois in 2024 and she began working at Monte Nido Chicago Day Treatment as a PHP/IOP Primary Therapist where she worked with clients who were in a higher level of care for eating disorders. Her experience working these different levels of care also provided further experience working with clients struggling with various mental illnesses including a variety of eating disorders, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, OCD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and various personality disorders. After a year away, Hillary realized that she missed the atmosphere of private practice and CCGL, so she transitioned back and is currently seeing clients through telehealth exclusively. Hillary believes the counseling process is a mutually constructive effort between both the client and the counselor. Her approach to counseling is to gain understanding of the client as a whole person. In order for change to occur, the client must feel like they have the space to be their authentic selves. She offers interventions from various schools of treatment thought, choosing interventions based on their suitability and perceived benefit to the client and his or her stated goals. Hillary believes every client wants to feel seen and heard; and is honored to get to journey alongside her clients to offer hope and healing.

Do you feel like no matter how hard you try, it’s still not enough? Maybe you’re stuck in a cycle of self-doubt, anxiety, or low mood that keeps you from truly enjoying life. Old wounds or difficult past experiences may still affect your relationships, self-worth, or ways of coping, making it hard to find stability and peace. Despite all your efforts, that deep sense of confidence and inner calm remains hard to find. In our work together, we can explore these patterns and underlying challenges, using effective approaches like CBT, DBT and EMDR therapy to help address and heal past trauma and unhelpful belief systems. If these struggles resonate, I’m here to help. My practice focuses on supporting individuals facing challenges with self-worth, anxiety, depression, life transitions and the impact of past trauma. In our work together, we’ll dive into these patterns, uncover their roots, and develop practical strategies for healing and growth. You don’t have to navigate this alone. I specialize in working with students who feel overwhelmed by anxiety, who feel too "in their head", and who struggle to take control of their own thoughts. During our work together, we'll help you to feel more confident, more connected with the people around you, and more ready to take on life's challenges. Our sessions will be highly structured. We'll learn a meditative technique that will help you to disrupt patterns of rumination, helping you to feel more relaxed and clear-headed. At the end of our sessions, we'll reflect on takeaways and set intentions for our next session. Finally, we'll use screeners and regular check-ins to assess our progress over time. I've helped hundreds of clients overcome their anxiety and lead fuller, more meaningful lives. If you feel that my methods would help you, please reach out to schedule an intake session. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you!

The best thing about my work is being able to come alongside others and offer compassionate, realistic support. I love to work with college-aged individuals as that is a time of great change and great opportunity for new experiences. There can be a lot of stressors piling up while in higher education, and sometimes having a safe, non-judgmental space to process can be super helpful. If you are dealing with anxiety, depression, academic-related stressors, body image issues, or relationships issues, I would love to be a support person for you. You will find my approach kind and casual, while also being very honest. I am taking new clients right now and can meet virtually or in-person in my office in Grand Rapids.

I believe, with time, clients have the ability to find a resolution to any frustration they may have, and a strong therapeutic relationship can quicken this process. Throughout our time together, we will identify the changes that best suit you as you work to create the life you desire and deserve. If you feel like something is missing in your life, or you just want the help to make a positive change, allow me to partner with you as we identify the circumstances that aren’t working for you and devise a course of action that will set you on a path to fulfillment. I have helped countless adolescents and adults progress toward their personal goals and build healthy relationships. I work with each client to reflect on their current state, uncover and resolve buried trauma, and improve communication skills. Additionally, I have over twenty years of experience working with adolescents and their families as a middle school counselor. I understand the school system, the resources available, and how to advocate for what success requires.

I work with a wide range of clients that have had ongoing struggles with depression, anxiety, and borderline personality disorder.
